Twitter Local Trends: do you see the value?

Well, I guess that by now, you all know that Twitter has introduced a new feature, enabling you to see what people are tweeting about in some countries and cities.

The list of countries and cities will continue to grow. On Twitter’s blog the Local Trends feature was announced this way: “As Twitter evolves, and more people share what’s happening in their own world, we want to provide another way for people to discover topics that may be relevant to them”.

OK, might be fun but I have to admit, I personally don’t see what’s the added value. Do you?

I mean, sure, it’s nice to find out what people are tweeting about in your region but aren’t there like 3,278 tools to do that already?

On Trendsmap, you can even see it on a map. And that’s just one. Personally, I don’t see what’s the value for the Twitter user. Or am I too blind? Then please fill me in.

If you look at it from a marketing perspective, I don’t see the added value either. They are plenty of marketing tools that allow you to see trends according to a region too. There are even plenty of tools that enable you to identify Twitter users, based on their location, and what they tweet.
